There is a tamil proverb that “Sesame is for the thin person; Horse gram is for the fat person”.

This means Thin person should eat sesame food when your body need strength. If you are fat, you should eat horsegram. Both will keep our body healthy.

Sesame is a medicinal herb. There are three types of sesame seeds: white, black and red.

- Black sesame is rich in calcium.

- White and red sesame are high in iron.

There are nine varieties of sesame. Black sesame, red sesame, white sesame, wild sesame, peacock sesame, ghost sesame, wild peacock sesame, mountain sesame, small sesame. Although there are many varieties of sesame seeds, both black and white sesame seeds are widely used.

Sesame seeds have been used as a food since ancient times. It is used for food and medicine all over the world. They had the habit of adding a little sesame to any dish, for example, our forefathers have been following the habit of adding sesame to various traditional foods such as murukku, cheedai, vada, sesame lattu, till today.

Sesame oil is extracted from sesame seeds. Sesame oil name is changed the common term to oil. The oil obtained from sesame seeds has more medicinal properties than the oils obtained from other plants.

Sesame leaves, flowers, pods and seeds are have medicinal properties.

Sesame contains 20% protein, 50% oil and 16% starch. Sesame seeds are rich in magnesium which helps in lowering blood pressure. Sesame balls contains zinc and iron. In general, a research report says that sesame contains high amounts of copper, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin B, E, and iron.

Research has also found that sesame and sesame oil prevent diabetes.

Medicinal Benefits of Sesame:

It has the power to cure intestinal diseases:

Consuming a spoonful of sesame seeds daily can cure intestinal problems and work to flush out waste from the intestines. Sesame seeds can be mixed with molasses and eaten with coconut or lightly roasted and powdered and eaten with ghee to cure hemorrhoids. Sesame leaves are used as an excellent remedy for intestinal diseases. Grinding sesame leaves and eating them can cure intestinal diseases. Generally, the leaves are boiled and drunk regularly. Hemorrhoids are cured by grinding sesame leaves with butter and eating them.

To protect the eyes and skin:

To get rid of rashes, scabies and sores on the skin, grinding sesame seeds and applying them helps to heal this gradually. Take sesame leaves and squeeze them in water and wash your face with the juice, the face will be bright, the eyes will sparkle, the eye nerves will be strengthened and become healthy. Sesame oil is used as a remedy for fever, earache, scabies and sores. Leave sesame oil in both eyes and apply it on your head and soak your head in hot water for three days to get rid of red eyes, eye pain, watery eyes, itching, and tingling.

Bone health:

Zinc in sesame seeds increase bone mineral levels and improve bone health. As sesame seeds are rich in calcium, the body gets the nutrients needed for bone health by consuming them. For vegetarians, eating sesame balls will give you good strength. For old people, sesame balls can be taken as an excellent food. This makes the bones stronger and healthier.

Prevents diabetes:

Sesame seeds contain magnesium and other nutrients that help fight diabetes. Sesame oil can be used to lower blood pressure.

To increase body strength:

Put a little sesame in hot water and take a bath to be healthy. If the body feels tired, eat sesame powder along with hot rice to get rid of body fatigue and increase body strength. Add curry leaves powder to sesame powder and pour some sesame oil and eat it to strengthen the body.

After grinding the sesame seeds and extracting the oil, the remaining rice is called Punnakku — Sesame cake. Many people do not know that it is rich in nutrients. A small amount of Sesame punnakku along with greens gives it a good taste. It is a health booster for humans. Sesame cake is used as extra feed for animals like cow and goat.

Eating with palm jaggery, black cumin and sesame seeds can solve menstrual problems for women.

Sesame is one of the most immune-boosting foods. It contains antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron and vitamin A and B. If you take it in the right amount, you will get the full benefit.

Black sesame prevents cancer cells from forming; Studies show that it regenerates brain cells. The most important reason for protecting us from cancer is the molecule ‘sesamin’. It is the main ingredient in sesame seeds.

There are many benefits of using sesame as a simple grain. Lets continue to eat in right quantity for the healthy life.
